Star Lab Facilitator Program - Application Deadline

Are you a junior or senior with research experience? Interested in outreach or teaching?
Become a STAR Lab Facilitator and share your love of research with high school students!
Students Taking Advantage of Research (STAR) Lab is an outreach lab and mentoring program that supports high school students doing authentic research and provides student support in science communication. While housed in Molecular & Cellular Biology, STAR LAB seeks to match mentors from all fields of STEM with high school students from across Arizona to grow the next generation of scientists and engineers. STAR Lab is a wonderful opportunity to help young people find their inner scientist/engineer while honing their mentoring and teaching skills.
Program Details: STAR Lab students participate in weekly, one-hour online meetings. As a STAR Lab Facilitator, you will lead a cohort of 5-10 students in their weekly meetings, guiding and supporting them through the research process. Most importantly, you will help STAR Lab students with science communication, from finding and understanding peer-reviewed articles to writing and talking about their research. In addition to leading a weekly student meeting, you will also be required to meet weekly with Dr. Daryn Stover and other facilitators to learn/practice strategies for teaching high school students. STAR Lab Facilitators are also expected to spend at least an additional hour preparing for, and reflecting on, each weekly student meeting.
The 2025-26 STAR Lab Program will run from late September to early March, with planning meetings starting in early September. The virtual meeting schedule will be determined in September, but Facilitators will need to be available at least one day a week between the hours of 3:30 pm and 7:30 pm to host a student meeting. Facilitators can receive 1-2 units of Independent Study from their home department for the Fall semester. An additional 1 unit is available for Spring. Volunteers are also welcome.
