Recruiting STAR Lab Facilitators 2024-25 Cohort - Application Deadline

Do you have undergraduate research experience? Are you interested in gaining leadership experience in outreach and mentorship?

Students Taking Advantage of Research (STAR) Lab is a UA/SARSEF outreach lab and mentoring program that supports high school students doing authentic research and provides student support in science communication. STAR LAB seeks to match mentors from all fields of science, mathematics, and engineering with high school students from across Arizona to grow the next generation of scientists and engineers. STAR Lab is a wonderful opportunity to help young people find their inner scientist/engineer while honing your mentoring and teaching skills.

Program Details: STAR Lab students participate in weekly, one-hour online lab meetings. As a STAR Lab Facilitator, you will lead a cohort of 5-10 students in their weekly meetings, guiding and supporting them through the research process. Most importantly, you will help STAR Lab students with science communication, from finding and understanding peer-reviewed articles, to writing and talking about their own research.

What are the requirements of a STAR Lab Facilitator?

  • Leading meetings: Host one-hour, online lab meeting per week. Also required to spend an additional hour before the lab meeting to prepare and reflect on each weekly meeting.
  • Learning educational strategies: Meet with Dr. Daryn Stover once a week to learn and practice strategies for working with high school students.
  • Time commitment: Facilitators will need to be available at least one day a week between the hours of 3:30 pm and 7:30 pm to host a lab meeting.

What are the benefits?

  • Units: Receive 1-2 of Independent Study credits from their home department (3 hours/week per unit). An additional 1 unit is available. Volunteers are also welcome!
  • Letter of Recommendation: Receive an LOR from Dr. Daryn Stover, STAR Lab Director of Research, for your involvement to use in future applications for higher education.
